Vacate from Stress

IMG_0964Through working closely with health practitioners here at Durham Family Chiropractic I am exposed to the impact that stress has on one’s daily life.

I am no expert, but research has shown that chronic stress takes its toll in part on our body’s ability to resist infection, maintain vital functions, and even ability to avoid injury. When you’re stressed out and tired, you are more likely to become ill, your arteries take a beating, your muscles become fatigued which often leads to tension headaches and you’re more likely to have an accident. Your sleep will suffer, you won’t digest your food as well, and even the genetic material in the cells of your body may start to become altered in a bad way. Mentally, not only do you become more irritable, depressed, and anxious, but your memory will become worse and you’ll make poorer decisions. You’ll also be less fun to be with!

Although I may not experience major work related stress, as I actually enjoy my job, I do however admit that just meeting the demands of my busy and full life is pretty hectic and stressful at times!

I find that the solution for me is to take a hard earned and much required vacation. The secrets to my successful holiday type are lots of sunshine, a bit of thrill seeking adventure, absorbing the local history and culture, plenty of good food and wine and of course great company.

Of course it is not always possible to travel, but I do find that a stay-cation can be just as beneficial! It is good to get caught up with all those outstanding tasks that stress me out, also catching up with friends, exploring the local countryside, getting plenty of rest balanced with enough exercise, eating fresh food and of course keeping up to date with my chiropractic adjustments keeps me sane.

This is what breaks my stress cycle, helps me maintain a healthy lifestyle. I return from my break feeling ready to take on the world again and I am hopefully once again more fun to be with!
